Kyoshi stops the tsunami from affecting her new island, but other coastlines aren’t so lucky.ģ-15 hours: The tsunami impacts the southern and western shores of the Earth Kingdom and associated islands, as well as almost all of the south-facing shores of the Fire Nation. Farmland is ruined by the inundation of saltwater. Hundreds of small villages are wiped away. It resurges in the form of a megatsunami, with runups exceeding 300 feet and pushing 10-20 miles inland. The sea level drops dramatically near the new coastline of the Earth Kingdom. The edge of the overriding plate buckles and breaks multiple times in a matter of hours, shifting the sea floor repeatedly and sending massive tsunami waves rippling around the ocean rim.
The eruptions cause megatsunamis on the islands in the area, with runups of 500 feet or more. The volcanoes flood the region with basaltic lavas, ejecting enough tephra to qualify as a VEI 8 eruption–a supervolcano. The new volcanoes build so rapidly and explode so forcefully that they boil the sea above them into a hurricane of acid rain, which immediately impacts the Southern Air Temple and Kyoshi Island. Airbenders must take to the sky to avoid being killed by the quake, and some don’t make it out. The new plate boundary alters all marine life in the area, disrupting commercial fishing and local ecosystems.ĥ-30 minutes later: On the other edge of the Kyoshi Plate, the crust is catastrophically subducting beneath an island in Air Nomad territory, triggering an enormous earthquake exceeding 9.5 on the moment magnitude scale, as well as both old and new volcanoes. The eruption is much like a geyser, and marine life is launched into the atmosphere to fall several miles away. The lava boils the surrounding ocean water, shooting steam high into the atmosphere, where it condenses into clouds and rain. The local beaches become too dangerous to use, and the entire shoreline is transformed into a cliff face. Immediate effects: Kyoshi creates a new divergent plate boundary, flooding the ocean floor with lavas and introducing new oceanic crust without the benefit of a continental shelf. This has drastic consequences on the world.
